Wall-mounted split · one room, done well

One indoor unit on the wall, one outdoor unit on the terrace or roof, one pipe run between them. It is the workhorse of air conditioning in Málaga and for a bedroom or a lounge it is still the sensible choice. The difference between a good split and a bad one is rarely the machine: it is the sizing, the position of the indoor unit so the air does not blow straight onto the sofa, the condensate drain that actually drains, and the pipework that is insulated and hidden rather than left dangling down the facade.

Multi-split · two, three or four rooms, one outdoor unit

If you want the bedrooms and the living room done but you only have space for one outdoor unit, or the community of owners only allows one, a multi-split is the answer. Two, three or four indoor units hang off a single outdoor machine, each with its own remote and its own temperature. It keeps the terrace tidy and the neighbours happy. The trade-off: the pipework has to be planned properly, because every indoor unit needs its own run back to the outdoor unit.

Ducted air conditioning · the whole home, invisible

One indoor unit hidden in a false ceiling, usually in a hallway or bathroom, feeding discreet grilles in every room. Nothing on the walls. With motorised dampers and a zone controller each room can have its own temperature. It is the system we install most in villas, new-build townhouses and larger flats where the owner does not want to see a machine. It needs ceiling space and it needs to be designed: badly balanced ducts are the reason some ducted homes have one freezing room and one that never cools.

Cassette and larger systems · shops, offices, restaurants

A cassette sits flush in a suspended ceiling and throws air in four directions, which is why you see them in shops, offices and restaurants across Málaga. For hotels, larger offices and buildings with many rooms we move on to VRF systems, where one outdoor installation serves dozens of indoor units with individual control. What a home in Málaga actually needs

Three things decide the system before the brand does. Orientation: a west-facing room takes the full afternoon sun and needs more than a north-facing one of the same size. The building: a 1970s block in Playamar with single glazing behaves nothing like a new build in Rincón de la Victoria with proper insulation. Salt air: anywhere within a few streets of the beach the outdoor unit lives in a corrosive atmosphere, so where it sits and how often it is cleaned matters far more than it does inland.

And one thing people forget: in Málaga, the same machine heats the house in winter.
